Who We Are
Mercy Education Project is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 1992 in Southwest Detroit that focuses on educating and empowering low-income women and girls in Detroit. MEP’s mission is to provide educational opportunities, life skills development, and cultural enrichment to help at-risk girls and disadvantaged women improve the quality of their lives.
What We Do
Mercy Education Project (MEP) was founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1992 to provide after-school tutoring for economically disadvantaged girls and women in southwest Detroit. By 1994 MEP had incorporated as a nonprofit organization and added a women’s adult basic education and GED program.
MEP’s after-school Girls' Program includes one-to-one after-school tutoring in reading and math for girls in grades 2-12. MEP also offers a College and Career Readiness program for high school girls, an Emerging Leaders program for middle school girls, a weekly robotics/web design program, and a full schedule of summer camps in science, math, writing, health and other areas. The Women's Program provides GED preparation, Adult Basic Education, and workforce development for low-income women. All services are provided free of charge.
