My name is Janice Banks and I'm the President & Founder of: Looking at the whole picture foundation which is a Nonprofit 501C3. We Connect Veterans and Returning Citizens to Community Resources.

In my ongoing commitment to supporting those in need within our community, I am reaching out to you with an appeal that is especially close to my heart. As we prepare for the upcoming school year, many families, particularly those of veterans and returning citizens—face challenges in providing basic school essentials for their children. Access to proper supplies can mean the difference between a confident start and a discouraging one for these students. We are here to serve the entire community. We will not leave anyone out that is in need ( Backpacks) of starting their school year off to a wonderful start.

This is my third year of asking for donations for Back-to-School Backpacks and School Supplies. Last year (2024) I was able to distribute over 150 backpacks’ (my goal was 100 Backpacks). This year’s goal is 200, because the need is always greater each year.

I'm looking for Clear Backpacks (whatever you can Afford within your Budget) along with school supplies (many of the schools are requesting Clear type of Backpack for safety reasons) . Whatever you can donate is greatly appreciated. My goal for this year is 200 Backpacks with school supplies.

Forgotten Harvest is looking for volunteers to help get the Community Choice Mobile Market ready for clients. Forgotten Harvest’s Community Choice Market will allow those in need to select their own food instead of receiving a prepacked or standard bag of groceries. With this method, those in need do not have to take items they already have, do not like, or cannot eat for health or personal reasons.

Volunteers are needed to assist with the following:

Sorting and unboxing shipments of food and sorting into food categories Shelving the food items in the proper sections in the client shopping area Helping to dust, wipe shelves, sweep, recycle boxes, and other basic cleaning and organization tasks as needed Putting out printed recipe cards, client cards, etc. in client waiting area Cleaning up and taking out trash

This opportunity will occur from  8:00-11:00 and 12:30-3:30 Monday-Friday and 8:30-12 on Saturday. Volunteers should be 18 years or older. Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds.

MANDATORY DRESS CODE

NO open toe or heel shoes (any kind of shoe exposing feet or any part of the foot. ex. sandals, sling back, or Crocs)

The United Way Community Fulfillment Center envisions a community where community members have seamless access to basic everyday essentials that are appropriate and of great quality through providing brand-new clothing, housewares, electronics, food and beverages, cleaning supplies, and home and automotive hardware. This program solely relies on donations from agency partners to support low-income families, local non-profit organizations, faith-based institutions, and grassroot community organizations within Southeastern Michigan. 

Our amazing Community Fulfillment Center's storeroom needs a couple of volunteers to assist clients and partners, sort donations, restock shelves, and perform light data entry tasks. Staff is available to direct volunteers every Wednesday from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm. We greatly appreciate your consideration and support! 

Volunteers will work with our site manager to welcome and assist clients, load donations into vehicles, sort donations, restock the shelves, complete data entry, and create a positive client experience. In addition, volunteers work directly with clients providing them with the basic needs and personal care items they need to support families in an uplifting and hopeful context.  

Both people skills and organization are important in the program.  Some Arabic language speaking skills are helpful but not necessary.  Volunteers will receive on-site training in all on-site processes.  Volunteers will gain valuable skills in customer service and warehouse maintenance. 

Volunteers may also assist with physical improvements to the space, including painting.

We are excited to offer volunteers the opportunity to receive training in disaster relief efforts. These trainings will equip you with essential skills and knowledge to effectively assist communities in times of crisis. By participating, you will learn about emergency response strategies, resource distribution, and community support techniques. Join us in this rewarding experience and become a vital part of our mission to help those in need during challenging times. Together, we can make a difference!

The program also hosts additional annual distributions for families and non & for-profit organizations, including perishable and non-perishables, brand-new clothing, houseware, electronics, beverages, cleaning supplies, household appliances, automotive hardware, and holiday gifts.  

Volunteers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Read to a Child is a national literacy and mentoring non-profit that fosters a love of reading, improves literacy skills, and empowers underserved children by inspiring adults to read aloud to them regularly. Research shows that reading aloud to children is the single most important activity for eventual success in reading, a key factor for success in school, work, and life.  When an adult reads aloud to a child, both parties have a joyful, rewarding experience that instills a love of reading, improves literacy skills, and enhances a child’s self-confidence. 

WHAT IS NEEDED? Volunteers are needed to serve as reading mentors for Kindergarten through fourth graders at local schools during their lunchtime. The goal is to instill a love of reading and provide social-emotional support.

WHEN DOES THE PROGRAM TAKE PLACE? WHAT IS THE TIME COMMITMENT? Mentors attend 30 minute reading sessions with their student once a week or every other week through the end of the school year.

Our Mentor Family is the foundation of our organization. Our team works closely alongside you to ensure that we support the bright futures of our students. The Center for Success Network is looking for people who love children and have a willingness to share time and joy with our staff and students as a virtual literacy mentor.

Requirements:
- 90 Minute Training Session
- 2-hour virtual Mentoring for Equity workshop
- Minimum commitment of one session weekly through the full program year
- Service commitment through the entire Academic School Year (October- May)
- A Background Check
- High School Juniors and Seniors are also eligible to become mentors, but must have 2 non-family references

Sessions are literacy focused and include time to build relationships with their students. Mentoring sessions will be 30-45 minutes long for virtual sessions and 1 hour for in-person sessions. These sessions will include 4 parts: energize and goal setting, reading a book, literacy activity, and closing and reflection. Our experienced staff are present the entire session in case a mentor has a question or needs some assistance.

The Child Safe Michigan Mentoring Program is one of the only successful year-long programs in the state of Michigan that is dedicated primarily to youth with lived foster care experience ages 14-23. Not only do youth with lived foster care experience deal with age-appropriate issues facing youth today, but they also have to face being separated from their biological family, residing in new homes, and attending new schools all while dealing with the abuse and/or neglect that led to their placement in the foster care system.


The Mentoring Program requires at least a one-year commitment where the mentor and mentee meet two to four times per month within the community. Mentors must be at 21 years old. Once someone has decided to take the steps to becoming a mentor, they will be sent a packet of materials including an application and background check authorizations. They will be asked to provide contact information for three personal references who can attest to your character and appropriateness in mentoring a youth. Along with completing the application packet, they will participate in an interview with one of the Mentoring Program staff as a means of learning about their hobbies and interests to best match them with a mentee. This interview also allows an opportunity for them to ask questions they may have about the mentoring experience. As a final step of the application process, they will be invited to attend a six-hour New Mentor Orientation; this training is typically held on a Saturday and is conducted either in-person or virtually every three months.

As a volunteer leader, you would come in-person to one of our sites to lead an hour-long program once a week from October to May. 

Volunteers will be partnered with a child and be tasked to read aloud books and lead activities based on those books with that child. This opportunity is best suited for those with early childhood education experience and/or interest, however, anyone can lead these programs. These programs work best when the facilitator is upbeat, energetic, compassionate, and engaging.

These programs are offered in person at hubs based on the volunteer's availability. Volunteers will be placed based on the needs of our hubs and the volunteer's proximity to one of our Brilliant pods.

You choose how often you want to deliver!  Most volunteers deliver twice per month.  Some deliver once per week.  Others are substitute drivers that do not have a routine route but pickup shifts when their schedule allows.Meal delivery only takes 60-90 minutes, delivered between 11am-1pm weekdays.Routes and food pickup locations are assigned close to your home or work.

Avalon operates food pantries at a number of our properties. Avalon's Food Pantry Volunteers will work with both our Community Building team and our tenant group on all aspects of running the food pantry.

Food Pantry Volunteer Core Responsibilities Include:Set-Up:Updating weekly temperature logs for fridges and freezersPrepping bags (open and double bag) for pick-ups and deliveriesSorting and tossing outdated or spoiled food from last weekBringing out any food for the pantry from fridge/freezerHelping unload Food Gatherers delivery from palletsSetting up and displaying food in the designated shopping areaDuring:Monitoring pick up line (maintaining social distancing)Running bags for pick up ordersEntering clients into database (Link2Feed)Assisting support coordinators in loading deliveries into their vehicleClean-Up:Putting any extra food away on shelves, into the fridge, or freezerWiping down tables and kitchen countersBreaking down boxes and taking them to the recycling areaTaking out trash and replacing linerSweeping and mopping floorsDesired Qualifications and Experience:Ability to effectively work with diverse populations in a non-judgmental wayAbility to work as part of a teamMust possess a highly positive and enthusiastic attitude and strong commitment toward helping those in needAvailable to commit to 4-8 hours a week, at least 12 hours a monthMinimum 3-month commitment preferredPhysical Demands:

Support Chapter Manager with client and student recruitment and enrollment, client evaluation, and data collection and management

Support Chapter Manager with volunteer tracking activities

Develop and support virtual events to promote connection between and among students and clients.

Collect student and client impact stories for Lori’s Hands’ communications.

Additional administrative duties as assigned.


Skills & Experience:

Strong and effective writer and verbal communicator

Helpful volunteers will assist older adults with both selecting and shopping for their monthly commodities, as well as loading prepacked food boxes and additional food commodities into vehicles. Volunteers will also replenish the supplies/commodities for distribution.

Friendly and patient volunteers are all welcome for this opportunity. Individuals or small groups (up to 5) are ideal. This is a moderately physical activity. Long periods of active moving and standing may occur.

Help participant select items off the shelves Assist them with loading items in their vehicles after shopping experience Replenishing and restocking shelves throughout the shift Collecting shopping carts and returning them to the buildingDistribute prepacked food boxes and additional food commodities to seniors by loading prepacked boxes into vehiclesReplenishing supplies/commodities for distribution

Helpful volunteers will assist older adults with both selecting and shopping for their monthly commodities, as well as loading prepacked food boxes and additional food commodities into vehicles. Volunteers will also replenish the supplies/commodities for distribution.

Friendly and patient volunteers are all welcome for this opportunity. Individuals or small groups (up to 5) are ideal. This is a moderately physical activity. Long periods of active moving and standing may occur.


Tasks:

Help participant select items off the shelves Assist them with loading items in their vehicles after shopping experience Replenishing and restocking shelves throughout the shift Collecting shopping carts and returning them to the buildingDistribute prepacked food boxes and additional food commodities to seniors by loading prepacked boxes into vehiclesReplenishing supplies/commodities for distribution

Attire: We suggest volunteers dress comfortably and wear comfortable shoes. No open toe shoes, leggings, shorts, tank tops/sleeveless shirts. 

Additional Information: There is limited storage space, please leave personal items in a secure place. 

Parking & Entering the building: Parking is located directly next to the building at 1300 Oakman Blvd. Use caution when parking and when crossing the lot - this is the same parking lot where participants will be picking up their food. Enter through the automatic doors at the front of the building on Oakman Blvd.

Focus: HOPE provides food to over 40,000 limited-income seniors in and around Detroit. Each month, every one of those seniors receives a box of food which contains healthy groupings of nonperishable foods. While most of our seniors come to one of the three Focus: HOPE centers to pick up their food, over 10,000 are homebound. Homebound seniors are unable to pick up the food themselves, so volunteers and agency partners such as yourself deliver it directly to them. You may deliver to individual homes or to buildings where many senior participants live at the same address. Teams and individuals are welcome!!

DELIVERY ORIENTATION:  

 

If you have not delivered food with us before, this is the opportunity for you! An orientation kicks off each shift on Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday at 10:00am & 2:00pm, and on Saturday at 10:00am. After you have successfully signed up for one of these shifts (you may register at the bottom of this page), you can deliver same day. The orientation itself only takes about ten minutes. 

 

HOW DELIVERIES WORK: 

 

To make food deliveries, volunteers use their own vehicles to transport pre-packed boxes of food to individual homes or apartment buildings. Based on the room in your car(s) and time available to you, you may choose the number of boxes to take and the areas to go to.  

Your first time delivering you will receive detailed instructions from a Volunteer Coordinator. Here is a shortened process overview: 

Decide how many boxes to deliver. Usually, volunteers can deliver about five in an hour.  Choose a zip code in or around Detroit which still has deliveries to be made. We have folders arranged by region and zip code, with information on each senior inside.  Select as many senior participants as you’d like to deliver to. You will call each senior before you leave Focus: HOPE, to let them know that you are coming and to confirm their address.  Record the deliveries you plan to make on a log sheet, which the Volunteer Coordinator will teach you how to use.  Back into the garage (we will show you where) to load your car with the appropriate number of food boxes. Each box will weigh 20-30 lbs. You will load your car yourself.  Plug the addresses into your phone, using the app of your choice.   Knock and drop a box of food at each senior’s home. No contact is required. You may not enter any homes.  Go straight home once every box has been delivered! Thank you!!!!! 

We recommend you bring a dolly, cart or wagon if you intend to make a large quantity of deliveries at once. 

Teams may work together to deliver to one location where many senior participants live at the same address. These buildings may have anywhere from 10-100 seniors who receive food from Focus: HOPE. Teams work together to transport the boxes in their vehicles and then distribute those boxes door-to-door within the building.

Comfortable attire and shoes are welcome. The warehouse temperature may fluctuate with the seasons, so layers are encouraged. Volunteers are prohibited from wearing open-toed shoes, sleeveless shirts, short shorts or exposing midriff. Please keep valuables at home, in your car or on your person. 

We recommend you bring work gloves.

For everyone’s safety, if you are not feeling well or have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 in the last 14 days, please stay home. 

Focus: HOPE strongly encourages all volunteers, guests and colleagues to wear a mask while in the building, regardless of vaccination status.

Lobby Runner volunteers should have ability to lift up to 50 pounds and to work on your feet for extended periods. However, there will also be down times when you might be able to read or do homework. Lobby Runner volunteer shifts are available Monday - Saturday. Victim Impact Panels (VIPs) allow victims/survivors an opportunity to heal by sharing their personal stories of bereavement, injuries, and loss with an audience of receptive participants. Volunteer: Support Group Facilitator

A key component of our Victim Services Program is Emotional Support. Our Emotional Support Program is growing and we are searching for a Support Group Facilitator. Our support groups are for those who have been impacted by drunk and or drugged driving crashes. Facilitators would host an Evening Virtual Support Group via our Microsoft Teams. The Evening Support Group would happen at the Facilitator's discretion sometime Monday-Thursday between 6:30pm-9:00pm ET. The Support Group on average lasts between 60-90 minutes. The Support Group meets Every Other Week. This would be a 6 hour monthly commitment. Two 1 hour Virtual Support Group Meetings, Two 30-60 minute check ins with Staff, and then 1 hour of preparation before each support group meeting. We ask you to please commit to 6 months. 

We are looking for volunteers who are either trained, co-hosted, hosted, or built Grief or Loss Support Groups or Similar types of Support Groups. YOU CANNOT HAVE A HISTORY OF A DUI/OWI FOR THIS OPPORTUNITY. 

 

Purpose: Life is forever changed after an impaired driving crash. Victims/survivors are often left bereaved, injured and financially devastated. With the emotional, financial and legal issues they face on a daily basis, victims/survivors need support to confront the various challenges that lie ahead. Volunteer support group facilitators are responsible for providing direct victim services to victims/survivors of impaired driving by way of support group facilitation. Volunteer support group facilitators do not conduct therapy or counseling during MADD support groups. Rather, they provide group coordination, gather needed materials, review exercises when applicable, attend to the pace of each session and offer emotional support.

Tasks/Responsibilities:

Work closely with Victim Services Specialist/Advocate or Volunteer Liaison to assess community needs for a MADD support group. Procure setting for the support group and develop a schedule for the Support group. Plan support group topics when applicable, gather materials (such as handouts) and procure refreshments prior to group sessions. In conducting group sessions, welcome members and provide introductions, review exercises and handouts with group members, facilitate group discussion and provide emotional support as needed. Maintain accurate records of support groups according to MADD and grant guidelines. Other duties as requested.

 

Required Skills and Qualifications:

Background check. Completion of the Beginning Victim Assistance Training Institute (VATI). Ability to communicate effectively. Sensitivity to the needs of victims/survivors of impaired driving. Ethical behavior and respect for confidentiality. Evening Availablity  Knowledge and Skill of Zoom Webinar Platform

The Evening Support Group would happen at the Facilitator's discretion sometime Monday-Thursday between 6:30pm-9:00pm ET. The Support Group on average lasts between 60-90 minutes. The Support Group meets Every Other Week. This would be a 6 hour monthly commitment. Two 1 hour Virtual Support Group Meetings, Two 30-60 minute check ins with Staff, and then 1 hour of preparation before each support group meeting. We ask you to please commit to 6 months. 

We are looking for volunteers who are either trained, co-hosted, hosted, or built Grief or Loss Support Groups or Similar types of Support Groups. YOU CANNOT HAVE A HISTORY OF A DUI/OWI FOR THIS OPPORTUNITY. 

 

Purpose: Life is forever changed after an impaired driving crash. Victims/survivors are often left bereaved, injured and financially devastated. With the emotional, financial and legal issues they face on a daily basis, victims/survivors need support to confront the various challenges that lie ahead. Volunteer support group facilitators are responsible for providing direct victim services to victims/survivors of impaired driving by way of support group facilitation. Volunteer support group facilitators do not conduct therapy or counseling during MADD support groups. Rather, they provide group coordination, gather needed materials, review exercises when applicable, attend to the pace of each session and offer emotional support.

Tasks/Responsibilities:

Work closely with Victim Services Specialist/Advocate or Volunteer Liaison to assess community needs for a MADD support group. Procure setting for the support group and develop a schedule for the Support group. Plan support group topics when applicable, gather materials (such as handouts) and procure refreshments prior to group sessions. In conducting group sessions, welcome members and provide introductions, review exercises and handouts with group members, facilitate group discussion and provide emotional support as needed. Maintain accurate records of support groups according to MADD and grant guidelines. Other duties as requested.

 

Required Skills and Qualifications:

Background check. Completion of the Beginning Victim Assistance Training Institute (VATI). Ability to communicate effectively. Sensitivity to the needs of victims/survivors of impaired driving.
