Opportunities From: United Way for Southeastern Michigan

Focus: HOPE provides food to over 42,000 limited-income seniors in and around Detroit. Each month, every one of those seniors receives a box of food which contains healthy groupings of nonperishable foods. We rely on volunteers to pack the vast majority of this food, so both individuals and volunteer groups are always welcome! 

Volunteers work together in groups of up to 30 per assembly line, cutting stock and then placing canned foods into Focus: HOPE boxes as they roll by. Volunteers may also unwrap and unbox pallets of food, collapse boxes for recycling and dispose of plastic waste. These tasks require moderate levels of activity, bending and lifting.  

A full line of volunteers is usually able to pack over 500 boxes of food for our seniors! 

Comfortable attire and shoes are welcome. The warehouse temperature may fluctuate with the seasons, so layers are encouraged. Volunteers are prohibited from wearing open-toed shoes, sleeveless shirts, short shorts or exposing midriff. Please keep valuables at home, in your car or on your person.  

We recommend you bring work gloves.  

For everyone’s safety, if you are not feeling well or have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 in the last 14 days, please stay home.  

Focus: HOPE strongly encourages all volunteers, guests and colleagues to wear a mask while in the building, regardless of vaccination status.  

Handwashing and sanitizer stations are available throughout the building.

Minors may not complete waivers digitally, so the system will not allow a minor to sign up to volunteer. Minors may not volunteer without a guardian present. Once on-site for the selected volunteer event, guardians may register their minors by signing a printed waiver on their behalf. For packing you must be age 13 or older to participate.

If you have court mandated community service hours, you must attend a separate, court-specific orientation. This orientation only takes place on Fridays at 10:30 a.m. at 1400 Oakman Boulevard, 48238. After the brief orientation, you may choose to stay and begin volunteering, or return another day.  

Bring a photo ID and know the name of your court and/or officer. If you have an official document which states your hours, bring it with you.  

If you do not attend a Friday orientation prior to volunteering, your hours will not be recorded for the court. No exceptions will be made.

The lot entrance is on La Salle Boulevard by where it intersects with Oakman Boulevard. Please do not park in the Early Learning Center lot or between buildings.

Gift Giveaway is Haven's holiday event that allows clients to shop for items for themselves and their children. This event consists of 3 set-up/donation intake days, Dec. 11-13, and three shopping days, Dec. 14-16, with different volunteer opportunities on each day. Dec. 17th will be a tear down and clean-up day. Please see below for volunteer tasks.

December 11th, 12th, and 13th-Set Up/Donation Intake Days - volunteers will accept donations, set up the room, organize and sort the donations, and take inventory.

December 14th,15th and 16th-Shopping Days - volunteers will help clients with their shopping, restocking tables, and keep things organized.

December 17th- Tear Down/Inventory and Clean Up

Light snacks will be provided all days. 

Our donation center has a direct and meaningful impact on the community. We provide support to vulnerable populations as well as essential resources to those we are in need. Without the support of our committed volunteers, providing services to over 225 people daily would not be possible.

Our donation warehouse supports this mission by providing essential hygiene items and appropriate clothing to meet basic needs and protect against harsh weather.

Working in the donation warehouse will consist of counting and recording inventory, sorting donations by category, organizing donations, and unboxing donations for our Day Center and Bridge Housing Campus.

Since this opportunity takes place in a warehouse setting, all volunteers must wear close toed shoes and long pants. 

*During the winter months, temperatures in the warehouse can vary significantly. We recommend dressing in layers to stay comfortable during temperature swings.

No prior warehouse experience is necessary; we will provide training at the beginning of the shift.

Join us for our Harvest for the Holidays event as we gather fresh collard greens to include with our HOPE FOR THE HOLIDAYS food boxes. Come lend a hand and help spread hope—one bundle at a time! Each day, we’ll have a specific harvest goal to meet. Some days may run longer than others, but once we reach the target number of bundles, our work for the day will be complete!

Please dress for the weather! Layers are best—don’t forget a hat and warm boots. We recommend something cozy for your feet and warm gloves if you have them (our work gloves aren’t very warm). We’ll have hand warmers available, along with hot drinks like coffee, cocoa, tea, and water to help keep you comfortable.

I'm trying to assist a Veteran ( Andrea Mitcham) whose daughter (April) is in need of a Wheel Chair Accessible Van. ( their Van was lost in a flood) This is where you and the community can help.

She has a big concerns because she is unable to transport her daughter to things outside of her doctors appointment ( afterschool programs, competitions-which she is very active, etc.

She would like to see if there is someone that can assist in a "Free" / "Donated"  or a low cost or someone that can work with her to direct her to programs that assist Veterans directly or a child with a disability.

Bio for Andrea Mitcham & April Shaw Andrea Mitcham is an Honorably Discharged United States Army Veteran and a widowed, low-income single mother devoted to raising her two daughters. After completing her military service, Andrea continued her commitment to public service by working 11 years with the 3rd Circuit Court. During her pregnancy with her youngest daughter, April, Andrea unexpectedly lost her job—an event that would both challenge and ultimately reshape her life. Andrea became a full-time caregiver when April was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Type 2, a rare neuromuscular disease that causes profound muscle weakness and limits nearly every physical function. Doctors warned Andrea not to plan for milestones like college, but instead to prepare for the worst. Despite this devastating prognosis, Andrea remained steadfast in her love, advocacy, and determination to provide April with the fullest, happiest life possible. --- April Shaw, lovingly known as Princess April, is an exceptionally social, outgoing, and joyful 15-year-old 10th grader whose positivity shines despite the challenges of SMA Type 2. April has never been able to crawl, stand, or perform basic daily tasks independently—such as dressing, bathing, or using the restroom—and relies entirely on her wheelchair and her mother’s care. SMA also affects her breathing and swallowing, making even common illnesses dangerous and often requiring week-long hospital stays. Yet April refuses to let her condition limit her spirit or her dreams. A natural leader and compassionate role model, April has been a beacon of hope and inspiration from a very young age. She was crowned Little Miss Wheelchair Michigan in both 2017 and 2018, served as a 2018 Child Ambassador for Easter Seals, and played baseball with the Miracle League of Michigan, even throwing the opening pitch at a Detroit Tigers game in July 2019. She has been featured on WDIV Channel 7’s Ann Marie’s All-Stars and has proudly served as a Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) Child Ambassador since 2019, marking six years of continued service. Her message is simple but powerful: she believes deeply in friendship, love, and harmony. --- For many years, a wheelchair-accessible minivan allowed April to attend school events, participate in activities, enjoy time with friends, and experience the world with independence. Sadly, when Michigan experienced devastating floods, the family’s only vehicle was destroyed. Without accessible transportation, April has lost far more than mobility—she has lost her independence and the opportunities other teenagers take for granted, such as going to the movies, visiting friends, attending study groups, or even learning to drive alongside her peers. A dependable, used wheelchair-accessible van can cost $25,000 to $75,000, often requiring a car payment that Andrea simply cannot afford. DRESS CODE

While we suggest long pants/sleeves due to skin irritation that comes from reaching into plants/grasses, our first priority is the safety and comfort of our volunteers. There are days where we are in high heat/humidity with not much shade. That being said, we have NEVER turned anyone away for wearing shorts. Below is a list of REQUIRED and SUGGESTED dress items to keep in mind:

REQUIRED ~ NO open toe shoes ~ NO slip on shoes ~ NO tank tops  

SUGGESTED ~ Hat, lightweight long sleeve shirt or jacket, rain gear, BOOTS or shoes you don't mind getting wet/muddy!

The weather is always changing and it can be 30 degrees when we start in the morning and 80 by the time we are done. Layers are always a great way to prepare.

*We supply ALL TOOLS NEEDED, GLOVES, ICE-WATER, BUG SPRAY, SUNSCREEN* If you'd like to bring water to donate that is always accepted!

If you are allergic to anything you may come into contact with at the farm (bees, for example) and require the use of an Epi-Pen, bring your Epi-Pen with you and inform farm staff

We have partnered with some generous nonprofits to bring free books to teachers in Detroit this holiday season.

We know teachers spend their own money for the sake of their students and we want to help reduce that financial burden with our Free Teacher Shopping Event.

Free Book Fair Facilitators help bring the joy of reading directly to students by setting up and running a free book fair at an underserved school. Volunteers create a welcoming, positive experience where every child gets to select free books to take home and keep. This is a hands-on, high-impact role that supports literacy, choice, and excitement around reading.

Set Up the Book Fair:
Arrange books on tables by grade level or category; help create an inviting and organized display.

Guide Students Through Book Selection:
Welcome each class, explain how the fair works, assist children in browsing, and ensure every student receives their allotted number of free books.

Engage Positively With Students and Staff:
Offer encouragement, answer questions, and create a fun atmosphere that celebrates reading and book ownership.

Maintain Flow & Organization:
Keep tables stocked, tidy, and easy to browse as classes rotate through.

Support Fair Operations:
Help manage lines, keep count of books distributed if needed, and assist teachers or staff during class transitions.

Pack Up Afterward:
Help consolidate leftover books, break down tables or displays, and load materials for transport.

By helping run a free book fair, volunteers directly support reading access and help students build their own home libraries—often for the first time. Your presence ensures a smooth and meaningful experience for hundreds of children.

To help address food insecurities in our community with compassion and dignity, PFC has partnered with Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan to open a Food Pantry onsite at the Bridge Housing Campus. As a Client Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting individuals and families as they access nutritious food through a shopping experience in the Pantry.

Key Responsibilities Include:

Warmly welcome clients to the pantry

Guide clients in selecting pantry items based on the USDA Balanced Plate Model

Help clients schedule future appointments.

Assist with stocking shelves and maintaining a clean and orderly site.

Qualifications:

Helpful and cooperative with a calm demeanor.

Able to walk and stand for up to 3 hours (with breaks and lift approximately 20 pounds at a time.

Must be 18 years or older.

Join a small but mighty team of volunteers to call 1,500 Food for Seniors participants in preparation for our Holiday Delivery program. We will have to contact every senior who will receive a package, to inform them of the delivery date and that they must be home. We will then organize paperwork for the confirmed participants into folders by region and zip code, so that they can be efficiently distributed to volunteers on the event date, Saturday, December 20, 2025. 

Calls will be made from Focus: HOPE's phones at our main location, 1400 Oakman Boulevard, Detroit 48238. Volunteers may park in the lot across the street, which has an entrance on La Salle where it intersects with Oakman Boulevard.

This is an office environment. Please no pants above the knee, or sleeveless tops or midriff. Face masks are recommended but not required to be worn on campus. Volunteers must be age 14 or older.

Elms Family and Community Services is seeking mentors for its 2025 - 26 Youth Programs.  Mentors will assist in guiding middle and high school youth.  The mentor will serve as lead support to youth involved in EFCS programs, assist in facilitating group workshops and coordinating experiential learning opportunities for program participants.

This position would require 2 hours for weekly program meetings with participants and 4 hours monthly for engagement with mentees.

Now more than ever, we’re reminded of the importance of helping others. After the distribution of SNAP benefits was impacted during the recent government shutdown, many families in our neighboring communities are facing food insecurity. To help meet this growing need, community member and friend of Brilliant Detroit, Lisa Garatoni, launched the Brilliant SNAP Campaign to provide extra support to families during this time.

As we approach the holiday season, we are calling on our community partners to help organize food drives to collect non-perishable items and essential household goods. These contributions will help stock the community pantries located throughout our Detroit neighborhoods.

Thanks to our wonderful partners at The Wave Project, most Brilliant community hubs now feature 24/7 food pantries just outside their doors. Families can access these pantries whenever they need, with no barriers and no questions asked. Together, we can make sure every family has what they need this holiday season.

End the year by volunteering at Stony Creek Metropark! The forests and other natural areas found here need a helping hand. Volunteers will help natural resources staff remove invasive shrubs while learning about how their work helps preserve important ecosystems.

All necessary tools and equipment will be provided. We will provide gloves, but feel free to bring your favorite pair! Please be sure to dress for working outdoors and off-trail in areas that may include poison ivy (long pants, layered clothing, closed-toe shoes, rain gear, hat, sunscreen, etc.). Don’t forget to bring a bottle of water!

Read to a Child is a national literacy and mentoring non-profit that fosters a love of reading, improves literacy skills, and empowers underserved children by inspiring adults to read aloud to them regularly. Research shows that reading aloud to children is the single most important activity for eventual success in reading, a key factor for success in school, work, and life.  When an adult reads aloud to a child, both parties have a joyful, rewarding experience that instills a love of reading, improves literacy skills, and enhances a child’s self-confidence. 

WHAT IS NEEDED? Volunteers are needed to serve as reading mentors for Kindergarten through fourth graders at local schools during their lunchtime. The goal is to instill a love of reading and provide social-emotional support.

WHEN DOES THE PROGRAM TAKE PLACE? WHAT IS THE TIME COMMITMENT? Mentors attend 30 minute reading sessions with their student once a week or every other week through the end of the school year.

WHERE DOES THE PROGRAM TAKE PLACE? Volunteers participate in sessions at one of partner schools (https://readtoachild.org/locations/detroit/participating-schools-detroit/).

HOW ARE THE CHILDREN SELECTED FOR THE PROGRAM? Teachers select specific students to participate in the Read Aloud Mentoring Program because they are 1) behind their age group in reading proficiency; 2) would benefit from the attention of a caring adult; 3) and/or English is their second language.

I’VE NEVER BEEN A READING MENTOR. WILL I RECEIVE ANY TRAINING? Yes. All volunteers will attend an information and training session prior to beginning the program.

As a volunteer tax preparer, you can ensure that our clients get the best return on their taxes. No need to be an accountant.  We arm you with tax law training and on-site expert support so that you can confidently complete accurate returns. With a minimum commitment of 30 hours, you can help us return millions of dollars to members of our community this season.

Training is available at several locations in southeast Michigan, including colleges. Both new and returning volunteers take training courses to learn more about tax issues, credits, and changes in the tax law. Training includes practice with the tax preparation software (Taxslayer), IRS certification tests and free food!

Once trained & certified, you will then be eligible able to volunteer at one of our tax sites located throughout Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Livingston and Washtenaw counties. Our tax sites are in public spaces such as libraries, community centers, and human resource agencies. Numerous shifts are available throughout Monday-Saturday so you will get to choose the volunteer shift & location that works best for you!

The Ypsilanti Thrift Shop, a local all-volunteer 501(c)(3) non-profit, is in need of volunteers to help in our Marking room.  In this position you would be responsible for receiving, sorting, marking/pricing, and displaying donations for sale. Starting this fall, Brilliant Pontiac will offer after-school homework help sessions for students in Kindergarten through 3rd grade. These sessions aim to support young learners with their schoolwork, encourage curiosity, and promote positive study habits. We are looking for volunteers to mentor students, assist with homework questions, model patience and a love for learning, and help tidy and organize materials at the end of each session. This is a great opportunity for older students to step into a meaningful mentoring role!

Volunteer to Support Families Facing Food Insecurity Many Detroit families are feeling the impact of reduced SNAP (food assistance) benefits. You can help make sure no neighbor goes hungry.

Volunteer Opportunities Include:

Helpful volunteers will assist older adults with both selecting and shopping for their monthly commodities, as well as loading prepacked food boxes and additional food commodities into vehicles. Volunteers will also replenish the supplies/commodities for distribution.

Friendly and patient volunteers are all welcome for this opportunity. Individuals or small groups (up to 5) are ideal. This is a moderately physical activity. Long periods of active moving and standing may occur.

Tasks:

Attire: We suggest volunteers dress comfortably and wear comfortable shoes. No open toe shoes, leggings, shorts, tank tops/sleeveless shirts. 

Additional Information: There is limited storage space, please leave personal items in a secure place. 

Parking & Entering the building: Parking is located directly next to the building at 1300 Oakman Blvd. Use caution when parking and when crossing the lot - this is the same parking lot where participants will be picking up their food. Food Pantry Assistant manages the daily operations of a food pantry, including coordinating food acquisition, managing inventory, distributing food to clients, and ensuring compliance with food safety and program guidelines. This role involves direct client interaction, administrative tasks like data entry and reporting, and collaborating with donors and other organizations to support community members facing food insecurity.

BCI helps homebound seniors receive their Focus: Hope grocery boxes. Each month, on the Friday after the 4th Thursday you can deliver between 6 to 8 Focus: Hope boxes of groceries. Choose to come every month? Then you're able to receive the same route and form a connection with the seniors. This is a wonderful way to make a huge impact every month or once in a while. 

Each box weighs around 30 lbs and typically can fit in the backseat of a sedan and trunk. Orientation required. 

ACC is a proud food distribution partner of Forgotten Harvest. Our location serves an estimated 200+ individuals weekly. Distribution takes place every Thursday morning from 8:30am - 12:30pm or until supplies last. 

Volunteers are needed to assist with unloading and organizing the food items into boxes inside our warehouse and distributing to clients in attendance. Currently we are operating as a drive-thru and walkup system, where the food is loaded directly into clients' cars or carts. 

Volunteers will work primarily outdoors unless sorting food in our warehouse; please dress according to the weather and wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Close-toed shoes recommended. Lifting boxes of 25+ lbs is often involved, but there are frequently smaller/lighter items to be sorted as well. If accommodations are needed, please let us know.

Help us set up and execute our food pantry at Towner! The pantry is on the first Wednesday of each month. Food typically arrives from Food Gatherers at 1:00pm, it is unloaded and set up in the community room til the pantry opens at 2pm and goes til 4pm. We could use your help unloading, organizing the food that is received, displaying food, checking residents in, walking residents through the pantry, and walking food to the homes of the seniors at Towner.

We serve hot meals Mondays - Fridays that are delivered from a caterer.  We need someone to receive and temp the meals, keep them at the correct temp, serve and clean up. The volunteer could work one day a week or all 5 days.  

In a nutshell: Our Corner Store Volunteers help connect patrons to much-needed resources, including fresh food, hygiene and household items, and more! The Corner Store, located in the basement, is a free resource for both Corner patients and the community, at large. The Corner Store Volunteer will manage the overall functioning of the Corner Store during their shift.

Time Commitment:

At least 3 hrs/wk. This is a weekly shift – the same day and time each week – ideally with intention of staying for at least a few months. *We are not open on weekends.

Your efforts will directly benefit the hundreds of community members who rely on our Soup Kitchen every Sunday.

Our food pantries are open Monday through Friday to all community members facing food insecurity. We are looking for volunteers to help at our West (1915 Pauline Blvd) and Carpenter (2650 Carpenter Rd) locations. The Community Resource Center offers an open-choice food pantry in Manchester, MI. The pantry is open for in-person shopping by appointment. Shoppers may also call in the grocery orders and schedule a time to pick up.  Volunteers are needed to assist shoppers in the pantry and fill phone orders.  Volunteers also maintain the food safety by stocking donated food and keeping the pantry clean.  Volunteers delivery groceries within our service area. 

Volunteers are also needed to work in the office, answering the phones and taking grocery orders.   Volunteers work a 3 hour shift, either 9am-noon or noon-3pm, Monday, Wednesday or Thursday, or 12-3pm or 4-7pm on Tuesdays.  Volunteers usually work once per week basis, though some split shifts with other volunteers. 

Volunteers are also needed to staff information tables at special community events.

Help Macomb County seniors stay in their homes!  Everyday there are seniors who cannot drive to the grocery store or prepare their own food.  Meals on Wheels volunteers take to the streets to help! 

Looking for a service project for your business?  Meals on Wheels can work for you.  If your business can commit to one or two days per month we can come train all your potential drivers at your location.  This can be a great way to build team spirit and show your organization's dedication to the community!   

We are looking for volunteers who will grocery shop for a senior in the community. Some seniors may want a volunteer to shop for them and others may want someone to take them. The volunteer will have the choice of which they prefer or feel most comfortable with.

Gleaners distribution centers process a tremendous volume of donated and purchased food to serve our neighbors in need. Volunteer tasks include packing food, sorting produce, working in the Clean Room, and more!

Shifts run every weekday from 9am-11:30am and from 1pm-3:30pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Up to 40 volunteers needed per shift depending on the type of shift.

This project requires that you are able to stand for several hours, though accommodations may be made with advance notice. Volunteers must be in 8th grade or older. Hello! We are in need of help with our food distribution site. Food is delivered by our grantors, and our facility stores the food and gets it ready for distribution. Hours vary. Requires some flexibility with the schedule. 4 hours per week, and information on the distributions would be available the week prior. Will have to use a pallet-jack. United Way Community Fulfillment Center

The United Way Community Fulfillment Center envisions a community where community members have seamless access to basic everyday essentials that are appropriate and of great quality through providing brand-new clothing, housewares, electronics, food and beverages, cleaning supplies, and home and automotive hardware. This program solely relies on donations from agency partners to support low-income families, local non-profit organizations, faith-based institutions, and grassroot community organizations within Southeastern Michigan. 

Our amazing Community Fulfillment Center's storeroom needs a couple of volunteers to assist clients and partners, sort donations, restock shelves, and perform light data entry tasks. Staff is available to direct volunteers every Wednesday from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm. We greatly appreciate your consideration and support! 

Volunteers will work with our site manager to welcome and assist clients, load donations into vehicles, sort donations, restock the shelves, complete data entry, and create a positive client experience. In addition, volunteers work directly with clients providing them with the basic needs and personal care items they need to support families in an uplifting and hopeful context.  

Volunteers may also assist with physical improvements to the space, including painting.

We are excited to offer volunteers the opportunity to receive training in disaster relief efforts. These trainings will equip you with essential skills and knowledge to effectively assist communities in times of crisis. Meal delivery volunteers serve a critical role in our program and in the lives of our neighbors who are homebound due to their health status. Volunteers choose the day (Monday-Saturday) and frequency (weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, substitute) for volunteering. Meals are picked up at the Ann Arbor Meals on Wheels office at 11:30am, and routes typically take 1-2 hours to complete.

Hope Clinic offers free, whole-person healthcare to those without insurance, and we need folks to help in our Food & Basic Needs program!

Hope Clinic's Walk-up Groceries allow clients to get produce, flowers, and a few shelf-stable foods each week without a scheduled appointment. The first 30ish minutes of each shift is the busiest, but things quiet down significantly after that.

Our Monday shift is a great way to test the waters if you are a first-time volunteer at the Farm Stand, but our greatest needs are for volunteers on Thursdays and Saturdays.

We are looking for volunteers who can come on a somewhat regular basis to help answer phones, schedule appointments, etc. Volunteers at the front desk help clients with a myriad of inquiries and referrals for all of Hope Clinic’s free services such as medical care, dental care, food programs, baby essentials, laundry services, and a variety of on-site behavioral health services.

The SOS Food Pantry needs strong and dependable volunteers to assist in unloading the Food Gatherers Delivery truck that arrives every Monday at 1pm. This shift involves heavy lifting and frequent movement carrying objects over 30lbs and is a fast paced task. We try our best to unload the truck within an hour or less so the Food Gatherers driver can move on to their next delivery quickly. Experience using dollies is preferred but not required.

Join us every Monday afternoon at our East location as we come together to make a positive impact on our community. As volunteers, you'll have the opportunity to be part of a meaningful experience where we distribute food from Forgotten Harvest to community members in need.

Your role will involve setting up and arranging tables and chairs, creating a warm and welcoming environment for our guests, distributing food, and cleanup.

With your help, we ensure that everyone has access to nutritious food while fostering a sense of belonging and care within our community. The volunteer shift typically runs from 12PM to 4PM.

The Lighthouse Distribution Center processes thousands of pounds of donated and purchased food each year to serve our neighbors in need. Volunteer tasks include sorting and packing food, loading food boxes into delivery driver vehicles, preparing toiletry bags, and more.   Packing food boxes typically takes place in the morning and loading food boxes into vehicles in the afternoon.   

*Volunteers must be at least 14 years of age.  Those 14 and 15 of age must be accompanied by parent or guardian.

This is a hands-on volunteer role. Volunteers must be willing and able to work with people of different backgrounds and nationalities, exhibit compassion and sensitivity, maintain safe working conditions, and uphold strict confidentiality of all member and volunteer information.
