Volunteer: URGENT NEED: Blood Donors Needed

The American Red Cross now faces a severe blood shortage due to an unprecedented number of blood drive cancellations in response to the coronavirus outbreak. Healthy individuals are needed now to donate to help patients counting on lifesaving blood.

Individuals can schedule an appointment to give blood with the Red Cross by visiting RedCrossBlood.org, using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, calling 1-800-RED-CROSS or enabling the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device.

As the coronavirus pandemic has grown here in the U.S., blood drive cancellations have grown at an alarming rate. To date, nearly 2,700 Red Cross blood drives have been canceled across the country due to concerns about congregating at workplaces, college campuses and schools amidst the coronavirus outbreak. These cancellations have resulted in some 86,000 fewer blood donations. More than 80% of the blood the Red Cross collects comes from drives held at locations of this type.

Here in the Michigan Region, approximately 160 blood drives have been canceled, resulting in about 5,100 fewer blood donations. The Red Cross is adding appointment slots at donation centers and expanding capacity at many community blood drives across the country over the next few weeks to ensure ample opportunities for donors to give.

Volunteer donors are the only source of blood for those in need

The Red Cross expects the number of cancellations to continue to increase, which is causing heightened concern for blood collection organizations and hospitals across the country. This blood shortage could impact patients who need surgery, victims of car accidents and other emergencies, or patients suffering from cancer.

Again, sign-up by visiting RedCrossBlood.org, using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, calling 1-800-RED-CROSS or enabling the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device.

Volunteer: Advocate for Change Volunteer

Work to strengthen existing laws and pass new ones. We can get you started by contacting your legislators. Help plan lobby days and meet with government officials.

MADD Michigan is currently working to get volunteers, victims, and survivors engaged in passing an All Offender Ignition Interlock Law. An ignition interlock is a device about the size of a cell phone that is wired into the ignition system of a vehicle.  A convicted drunk driver must blow into the device in order to start their vehicle.  If they have a measurable amount of alcohol in their system, the vehicle will not start. 34 states and Washington DC have passed this law already, and Michigan has not passed the law, it is currently sitting in the Michigan House of Representatives; House Bills 4420 and 4421. Public Policy volunteers would assist staff by engaging the public and legislators through educating them on the law. Public Policy volunteers also spread awareness of MADD’s legislative agenda throughout their communities, and communicate MADD’s legislative agenda to their legislators and encourage legislators and community leaders to support MADD’s legislative priorities.

As 2019 marks the 52nd year anniversary of the 1967 Detroit uprising, Life Remodeled and our partners continue to invest in the neighborhood surrounding Central High School and the Durfee Innovation Society, in the community where Detroit’s civil unrest began. Our collective impact serves not only as a powerful commemoration of the progress that has been made, but also the progress we continue to strive toward.

In the past, Life Remodeled made only one year investments into neighborhoods, however in 2017 we decided to commit a minimum of four years per community. Therefore, we will remain focused on the Durfee/Central community until at least the year 2020.

Volunteers are needed to mow, cut, and rake the Life Remodeled Durfee Innovation Society property. Interested volunteers must be able to operate a zero-turn mower, lawnmower and weed whip.

Volunteer: Humane Education Volunteer

Are you a retired teacher? A college student studying to become a teacher? Just love public speaking and hanging out with kids and animals? Perfect! The Michigan Humane Society offers Humane Education Programs for the community, with an emphasis on presenting youth-friendly programs. These programs teach metro Detroit area youth all about being an animal advocate and also teaches about safe animal handling skills. The presentations are then followed by a game or craft for the children (like making toys for our shelter dogs and cats!)

We are looking for volunteers who love animals, would like to present these programs, are comfortable working with children and don't mind working with a little bit of technology (like a projector and PowerPoint slideshow).

Let us know if this is the right opportunity for you!

Volunteer: Hospice Companionship Volunteers - Downriver

Quality of care is one of the cornerstones of our mission - a mission that could not be accomplished without the many 'helping hands' of our volunteers. We are seeking volunteers throughout the Downriver area: Taylor, Trenton, Brownstown, Wyandotte, Southgate, etc., to visit hospice patients throughout these communities. Visits take place in patients' own homes, as well as nursing homes, assisted living, memory care, group homes, hospitals. Volunteers are asked to provide companionship to our patients, which can include reading to them, looking through magazines or cookbooks, watching movies or sports, playing music, visiting with a pet, or simply chatting and holding a hand. Our volunteers do not provide any hands-on physical care to our patients. Our hospice volunteers have shared that they find their work to be personally gratifying and meaningful, and we hope that you will share in this experience.

Volunteers with availability during weekday mornings and afternoons are needed most, and we ask that our volunteers make at least a one year commitment to our organization. Volunteers will be provided with ongoing one-on-one staff support throughout their service with us, and will be invited to ongoing education opportunities, and appreciation events. Our volunteers must complete an online application, interview, background checks, an orientation class, fingerprinting, and annual TB testing.

Hospice of Michigan requires that any person who has suffered a personal loss wait a period of 12 months prior to volunteering. Thank you for considering this enriching and unique volunteer opportunity.

Hospice of Michigan requires that any person who has suffered a personal loss wait a period of 12 months prior to volunteering. Thank you for considering this enriching and unique volunteer opportunity.

Agency: Hospice of Michigan

Quality of care is one of the cornerstones of our mission - a mission that could not be accomplished without the many 'helping hands' of our volunteers. We are seeking licensed cosmetologists and barbers who are interested in providing in-home haircuts to our patients. When facing the end of life, maintaining one's dignity and sense of being oneself are imperative. Providing a haircut to a patient who cannot leave his or her home is a treasured gift to both the patient and their family.

Our patients reside in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, St Clair, and surrounding counties. Visits take place in patients' own homes, as well as nursing homes, assisted living, memory care, group homes, and hospitals. Our hospice volunteers have shared that they find their work to be personally gratifying and meaningful, and we hope that you will share in this experience.

Volunteers will be provided with ongoing one-on-one staff support throughout their service with us, and will be invited to ongoing education opportunities, and appreciation events. Our volunteers must complete an online application, interview, background checks, an orientation class, fingerprinting, and annual TB testing, and provide a copy of current license.
