Who We Are

Mission: To partner with adult learners to develop their skills and pursue their goals by providing free literacy support through a network of trained volunteer tutors.

Washtenaw Literacy was founded in 1971 by a small group of volunteers who wanted to help other adults learn to read. Today, our organization has grown to serve over 1,500 adults each year in our one-on-one and group tutoring programs. We remain the only organization in Washtenaw county that provides free, customized one-on-one tutoring to adults in reading and writing or English as a second language.

What We Do

Believing that literacy is the foundation for a sustainable community, Washtenaw Literacy provides literacy support, free of charge, to adults through a network of trained tutors. Our organization has over 40 years of experience in helping individuals improve their reading, writing, math, computers, and English as a second language skills. We offer various tutoring programs to support adult learners with basic literacy and English language learning. Our tutoring services are available at multiple locations in Washtenaw County and online.
