Who We Are
Mission: To transform lives and communities by furnishing homes for individuals, families, and veterans emerging from homelessness.
Humble Design was founded in 2009 by Treger Strasberg after she discovered that a friend who had recently experienced homelessness was living in an unfurnished home, with her children sleeping on piles of blankets. Because of this, Treger and her friend Ana began collecting used furniture and household items from their community. As donations came in, Treger reached out to local shelters to help furnish homes for families transitioning out of homelessness. The organization now operates in several cities across the U.S., including Detroit, Chicago, San Diego, and Cleveland.
Humble Design helps to create dignity to individuals, families, and veterans emerging from homelessness by custom designing and fully furnishing their new homes. They work with a network of shelters and human service organizations to identify those most in need. Their work not only provides furnishings, but also supports long-term stability, self-empowerment, and hope for a better future for all these individuals.
What We Do
Humble Design fulfills its mission by transforming empty houses into fully furnished, personalized homes for individuals, families, and veterans emerging from homelessness. They work in partnership with local shelters and social service organizations to identify clients most in need. To support their work, Humble Design collects new and gently used furniture and household items (like beds, linens, kitchenware, and decor) from community donors.
Once matched with a client, Humble Design’s team of designers and volunteers create customized home interiors based on each family’s unique needs, preferences, and personalities. The result is a welcoming environment that offers more than comfort because it helps with self-worth and a sense of permanence.
By providing designed spaces and furnishings, Humble Design helps individuals to rebuild their lives with hope and confidence, directly supporting their long-term stability and helping break the cycle of homelessness.
