Who We Are

Mission: To mobilize the caring power of Detroit and Southeastern Michigan to improve communities and individual lives in measurable and lasting ways.

In Southeastern Michigan, nearly half of all families struggle to meet their basic needs. At United Way, we mobilize a network of hundreds of partners and thousands of donors, advocates, and volunteers to build communities of stable households and thriving children. For more than 100 years, we’ve responded to the community’s most pressing challenges around children and family, health and the community. Honored with a symbolic or actual “torch drive” each year, our annual campaign has brought thousands of companies and individuals together for a common cause: supporting our Southeastern Michigan communities.

What We Do

We work to build equitable communities where all households are stable and every child can thrive. In our region, nearly 40 percent of households are struggling to afford their basic needs like food, housing and health care. United Way for Southeastern Michigan is the leader in the mobilization of people and resources to address these immediate needs, while creating and advocating for long-term change.
