Who We Are

Mission: To build community through discovery, education, and partnerships.

The Ypsilanti District Library (YDL) is a vibrant, inclusive public institution serving the communities of Ypsilanti and neighboring townships for over 150 years. Founded in 1868 by a group of visionary women, YDL has grown from a modest collection of 175 books to a system of three welcoming library branches serving more than 400,000 visitors annually. We are deeply rooted in our community’s history and committed to building a thriving, highly-connected future through equitable access, lifelong learning, and inclusive services.

What We Do

YDL provides innovative resources, dynamic programs, and safe, engaging spaces for all ages and backgrounds. We offer access to information, technology, and creative opportunities that reflect and celebrate our diverse community. Our values of inclusion, community focus, diversity, creativity, reinvention, and welcoming service guide everything we do—from educational programming and cultural events to curated collections and responsive support for local needs.
