Who We Are
Mission: To transform Detroit by teaching about waste and recycling.
Green Living Science (GLS) is an outgrowth of Recycle Here!, Detroit’s drop-off recycling center and the city’s neighborhood recycling program. GLS was founded in 2007 in response to the Detroit Public Schools Community District’s request to bring education about recycling and natural resource conservation to its students. Early programming consisted of assemblies and in-class lessons to teach children about reusing and repurposing materials as well as natural resource conservation. Over the years, we’ve expanded our programming to not only serve schools, but also businesses, and community members. GLS is dedicated to educating Detroiters about the impact waste has on our planet. GLS was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2011.
What We Do
Green Living Science is dedicated to working alongside Detroiters to increase recycling participation and awareness of environmental issues and personal responsibility through education. Green Living Science works to connect the Three Pillars of Community in its educational outreach. Over the years, GLS has expanded offerings to include educational programs, recycling programs, field trips and tours. We’ve also increased the scope of our constituents to include educators, workplaces and businesses, local communities and other groups.
