Who We Are

Mission: To support residents and businesses in building a healthy and thriving community.

Founded in 2001 by Second Grace United Methodist Church, Joy-Southfield Community Development Corporation (JSCDC) initially operated a “mini-clinic” to provide preventive healthcare for uninsured residents. In 2005, construction began on the 3900-square-foot Joy-Southfield Health and Education Center, which opened in 2006, offering expanded primary care, disease management, and preventive health services. In honor of Juanita Reaves, a key figure in the clinic’s creation, the clinic was renamed The Juanita Reaves Free Clinic. In 2014, JSCDC partnered with Covenant Community Care to further expand healthcare services. 2019 marked a year of community engagement, with JSCDC connecting with local residents and partners to assess needs and plan future initiatives aimed at fostering a healthy, vibrant community. These efforts led to the development of new initiatives and a rebranding to strengthen its impact on local residents and businesses.

What We Do

Joy Southfield Community Development Corporation has played a pivotal role in addressing the economic challenges within Detroit’s District 7. There is a comprehensive approach to fighting poverty driven by residents of District 7 with public resources and community engagement to meet basic needs, to stimulate growth and to strengthen neighborhoods and economic opportunities. In short, JSCDC enables individuals and communities that may otherwise be at the margins of society to help themselves up the ladder of opportunity to greater levels of self-sufficiency. Residents of disadvantaged communities continue to find that housing is more expensive, jobs are more elusive and financial stability remains out of reach.  Even more challenging is obtaining the capital needed to stimulate economic activity.  Now more than ever we need a strong and innovative CED sector to help reverse these trends.
