The mission of the Luella Hannan Memorial Foundation is to preserve the dignity and enhance the quality of life of seniors in Michigan. The vision of the Luella Hannan Memorial Foundation is that seniors are respected, valued and empowered to reach their potential and connected to a community of their choice.

The Ellen Kayrod Gallery was established in 1996 by The Luella Hannan Memorial Foundation (e. 1925) to highlight and support artists 55 and older by giving them a space to display and sell their artwork. The Kayrod Gallery hosts a diverse series of exhibitions, workshops and events throughout the year, and works closely with older adults in Metro Detroit and beyond to connect them with opportunities for enrichment and self-expression.  

In addition to the beautiful main gallery, there are several classrooms, conference and meeting rooms, an intimate black box theater and other spaces used for programming for older adults, including our BeyondU classes and workshops. BeyondU provides area older adults with opportunities for lifelong learning, social interaction, personal enrichment, and intellectual growth. Many of these spaces are also available to rent for meetings and events, which helps to support all of the services offered through the Hannan Center. The gift shop also features a wide variety of jewelry, textiles, and other original artworks by area artists. 

The gallery is located on the first floor of the Hannan Center in the heart of Detroit’s cultural district, adjacent to Wayne State University as well as many museums, galleries, restaurants and more.  It is a convenient and welcoming place for all people to connect with art and culture, and a hub within the community of older adults in Detroit.
