Mission: To empower women survivors of trafficking to reclaim their lives through safe housing, supportive community, and access to resources.
Haven Homes of Detroit is a nonprofit organization founded in March 2021 by Aaron and Kristen Short, a husband-and-wife team driven by a shared vision to support women survivors of human trafficking and exploitation. Their journey began in 2015 when Kristen became involved with Love Runs, a running group supporting local nonprofits in Michigan committed to serving people caught in human trafficking. In 2020, Aaron had a experience while volunteering with a local nonprofit, where he encountered a woman who had recently left trafficking but relapsed due to a lack of stable housing and support. This highlighted the critical need for safe, long-term housing for individuals.
Since opening its first home in June 2023, Haven Homes of Detroit has provided a healing, hope, growth, and transformation. The organization has renovated abandoned houses in Detroit, turning them into true homes for survivors. In February 2025, they celebrated the opening of their second home, expanding their capacity to support more women in need.
