Who We Are

Mission: To assure, in partnership with the community, the conditions necessary for people to live healthy lives through prevention and protection programs.

The Washtenaw County Health Department (WCHD) is a public agency committed to creating a healthy community where every resident can achieve their best possible state of health and well-being. With over 75 years of service, WCHD leads efforts in disease prevention, health promotion, and environmental protection. We are grounded in the values of prevention, partnership, equity, accountability, and social justice.

What We Do

WCHD protects and improves the health of Washtenaw County residents through a wide range of public health services. We:

  • Prevent and control disease through vaccination, monitoring, and health education

  • Promote healthy living with programs focused on nutrition, substance use prevention, and sexual health

  • Protect the environment by ensuring access to safe food, water, and air

  • Advance health equity by addressing social determinants of health and reducing disparities

  • Assess and respond to emerging public health threats and community needs

As the local public health authority, we provide the tools, resources, and opportunities individuals and families need to make informed health choices and live healthier lives.
