Who We Are

Mission: To inspire and educate people to care for the earth and its creatures.

The Detroit Zoological Society is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that operates the Detroit Zoo and Belle Isle Nature Center. The Detroit Zoo opened on August 1, 1928 on 125 acres in Royal Oak, Michigan. Over 1.6 million guests visit the Detroit Zoo each year to learn, relax and reconnect with nature.

We focus on promoting conservation, providing exceptional care for animals, and creating engaging experiences for visitors that foster a deep appreciation for wildlife and the environment. Our goal is to lead efforts in wildlife conservation and to serve as a resource for education and stewardship.

What We Do

The Detroit Zoo has 125 acres of naturalistic habitats for more than 2,000 animals from aardvarks to zebras and features award-winning attractions such as the National Amphibian Conservation Center, Great Apes of Harambee and Arctic Ring of Life. The Zoo’s newest attraction is the spectacular Polk Penguin Conservation Center, the largest facility for penguins in the world.

Volunteers are a vital part of our organization and expand our capacity to serve our audiences both on grounds and off grounds. Over 1,000 volunteers contribute in many ways including as informal educators, customer service representatives, gardeners and clerical assistants. We accept volunteers ages 14 and above. Volunteers do not have direct contact with animals.

All volunteers complete a three-step process: application and background check; orientation with interview; training.

The Volunteer Services Team looks forward to meeting you!
