Kay Clark has always loved giving back. In her words, "The world is huge, and I want my existence to count for something."
"I've volunteered in some form my whole life, but it really started through my church," she explains. "I would help with serving meals and doing meals on wheels to homebound seniors."
She also works for Quicken Loans - a company committed to helping the Greater Detroit community. Her employer, she says, makes it really easy for employees to give back in ways that they're passionate about, and makes a donation to a charity of the employee's choice for every 40 hours they give in volunteer service.
That made United Way for Southeastern Michigan a perfect fit for Kay, and she has gone all-in. She's a staple at our Meet Up and Eat Up summer block parties, as well as the winter MUEU events with the Detroit Lions. She said she loves MUEU because "you not only see children and families playing and having fun, but you get to see them learning as well. The activities that are set up for the kids are both educational and fun, and I love to see that kind of combination."
Kay also gives her time with other youth-related causes, like the build-a-bike program where she got to build bicycles for kids and see the joy in their eyes as they picked out the ones they wanted. But when it comes to giving back, she's not picky.
"I try and jump at every opportunity that I can, especially when it's with UWSEM," she shares. "What I love most about your volunteer opportunities is that you can really see the impact that UWSEM is making in the community, and how important it is.
"It really is about paying it forward, and that's what I'm trying to do through my volunteer efforts."
