In Southeastern Michigan, only 29% of households and communities meet the threshold of print-rich environments. With so much of a child’s success riding on their access to print materials, United Way’s Read United initiative is committed to putting more books in the hands of students across our region while encouraging our students and families to read together. Through these efforts, United Way hopes to bring awareness to the systemic barriers that impede literacy.
Volunteers are needed to build 1,500 literacy kits that will be delivered to nonprofit partners. Kits will include a book, along with related materials, crafts, games, stickers, and United Way materials.
Kit packing will take place at the United Way office from:
- Wednesday, March 18:
- 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
- 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
- 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.
- 2:00 p.m - 3:00 p.m
- 3:00 p.m - 4:00 p.m
Volunteers are also needed to deliver completed kits to United Way’s education partners. Click here for more information on volunteering for delivery.
