DRESS CODE

Our top priority is the safety and comfort of our volunteers. While we recommend long pants and long sleeves to help prevent skin irritation from plants and grasses, we understand that weather conditions vary. Some days can be hot and humid with limited shade, and we have never turned anyone away for wearing shorts. That said, please be aware that poison ivy is present throughout the farm property. Volunteers typically work inside the fenced areas, while poison ivy is most commonly found along the tree lines.

Please review the following required and suggested items before coming to the farm:

REQUIRED

·        Closed-toe shoes (no open-toe shoes)

·        Secure footwear (no slip-on shoes)

·        No tank tops

SUGGESTED

·        Hat

·        Lightweight long-sleeve shirt or light jacket

·        Rain gear

·        Boots or shoes you don’t mind getting wet or muddy

Weather can change quickly—it may be 30°F in the morning and 80°F by the end of the day. Dressing in layers is always a great way to be prepared.

*All tools, gloves, ice water, bug spray, and sunscreen are provided. If you’d like to contribute, donations of water, gloves, sunscreen, or tools are always welcome.*

**If you have allergies to anything you may encounter on the farm (such as bees) and require an EpiPen, please bring it with you and notify farm staff upon arrival.**

Inclement Weather Plan: When volunteering at Forgotten Harvest Farms, being prepared for inclement weather is essential to ensure both safety and productivity. Michigan weather can be unpredictable, so we encourage volunteers to dress in layers and wear waterproof boots or sturdy shoes suitable for muddy or wet fields. Bringing a rain jacket or poncho is a smart precaution in case of unexpected rain, while sunscreen and hats are just as important on sunny days. Please be sure to check the weather forecast before arriving and be ready for quick changes in conditions. Staying hydrated and taking breaks in shaded or sheltered areas during periods of extreme heat or storms helps keep everyone safe and comfortable while supporting the farm’s vital mission. If a storm develops while we are working in the fields, we will move to the barn to wait it out. However, if severe weather is expected to last for an extended period and it is not safe to return to the fields, we may end the volunteer day early and send everyone home. Your safety is always our top priority. In the event that we need to cancel a volunteer opportunity, we make every effort to notify you as early as possible so you don’t spend unnecessary time traveling to the farm. For this reason, it’s important to keep your volunteer profile up to date with your current email address and phone number whenever possible.
